![]() Thank you so much for visiting my gallery! My work consists mainly of oekaki realism and Pokémon fanart. However, there are some works concerning other fandoms in there, including Red Dwarf, LoTR and The Last Unicorn! Feel free to note me if you have any questions about my artwork! Hi everyone!
Yes, its another of Yaysters topical questions! Now I havent done one of these in a while, so I figured it was about time! My question today is about fandoms. I am sure that most of you have been involved in one or two at some point! What I would be interested to know is your experiences within them.
From my personal experience, I have found different fandoms to be very unlike in terms of how friendly they are. Some are very welcoming and encouraging to newbies, and some are quite hostile and elitist. Of course, with all fandoms you can break into the inner circle if you try hard enough but sometimes you have to try a lot harder than others! So which have you been involved with, and what were your experiences? Heres mine
Pokémon: One of the first online fandoms I was involved in. Since the fanbase is generally younger than me, it was an interesting experience, but generally everybody is very friendly and willing to accept new fans. However you might find some brasher attitudes when it comes to rating teams, as some of the experienced players like to tell you whats what!
Lord of the Rings: This was one of the friendliest fandoms Ive ever been in. I joined the War of the Ring forum, where everybody was lovely (there were no forum arguments at all, as far as I can remember!) Fans of the books and fans of the films got along really well, and newbies were always welcomed into the fold.
Red Dwarf: This was mixed some fans are great but some are a little snooty and sarcastic. Generally this fandom isnt hugely active online, so it may have a different atmosphere at conventions, etc. Have met some very good friends through this fandom though!
Friends (TV show): Its in the name really, a very friendly fandom where I havent found much hostility at all.
Life on Mars/Ashes to Ashes (TV shows): IMO this fandom has gone downhill. It used to be very friendly, but since the second show aired it has split the fandom in two (those who loved it and those who hated it), and now there are lots of arguments and spiteful comments flying around. It makes me sad, as its such a silly thing to argue about!
Well, Ive told you mine please tell me yours! You may even have a completely different experience to me within the very same fandom!
By the way, my Month of Deviousness for July is still open! Click the link to see the story so far, and to continue it! Its getting pretty long now![link]

Devious Comments
The fandom alternates between hating anything not canon universes and loving work the really does need a beta to clean it up.

I've never been to a forum or a club for Zelda or anything however, so I have know idea what the fandom group itself would be like. Im a fan on my own, and I quite like it! Theres no-one arguing with my opinions, and although I don't get anybody to discuss thing with, its fine by me.
I'm also a Might and Magic fan, although I'm yet to find anyone other than my dad who has even heard of it. To be honest, I haven't actually tried looking on the internet, but there you go.
Doctor Who too - but thats something I like to discuss with my friends. Its fun and all, but I wouldn't like to have a massive discussion on conspiricy theories.

Finding a hot date is like finding a good parking space; the good ones are always taken and the rest are handicapped! >_<
- Pokemon. More than obvious, I suppose. It was the very first real fandom in which I've involved, and still I'm (even if I can't stand with the latest DS games)
Another fandom? Well, not in this moment, but I was in Happy Tree Friends fandom some years ago, being one of the only 3 chileans participating on HTF Forums.

Digimon fandom is one of the ones I've been in and out for a long time. It's generally a pretty friendly group, but it's also cliquey, if you know what I mean..
The Harvest Moon fandom is another that I go in and out of and I can tell you that the fans are all REALLY accepting. They always seem to be super excited to meet other fans. It's actually one of the best fandoms I have ever been involved in.
My experience with the Pokemon fandom has been about the same as yours as well. I haven't been active in it for years, but the fans were always really friendly and nice.
Harry Potter is an interesting fandom to be a part of, too. I find it's really hard to actually be accepted by the members.. I used to write fanfiction for it and people seem to be pretty grumpy for the most part.. Very picky and not very friendly.. On DA they are also not incredibly friendly, unless you support their favorite couplings..
In a way, I guess fandom groups are kind of like high school cliques I find.. Some are more snobbish than others.. It really is bizarre when I think about it. o_o;

I think other fandoms I've been involved in/looked at (Inuyasha, Naruto, Avatar, Harry Potter, Star Wars) are decently friendly at a base level. But with a lot of Japanese anime, you get elitist snobs who argue that the Japanese version is the best, and other fans who argue that their language dub is just as good, if not better.
From what I've seen, shipping is the big thing that can make a fandom go over the edge. Harry Potter, Avatar and Stargate SG-1 come to mind as fandoms I like that are decent generally, but the shipping makes them into some of the most hostile fandoms I've ever seen (and, thus, ones I now avoid). I try not to let shipping wars/arguments color my view of a fandom, but when the arguments can be that hostile.. it just ruins the whole fandom for me. x_x
