Pokemon Art Style Tutorial by Yayster Pokemon Art Style Tutorial by Yayster
...otherwise known as the "Official Pokémon Style Tutorial", but it wouldn't fit in the title! >_<

So many people have asked me for this, so I thought I'd give it a shot! :) I hope you find this useful! I've always admired the official style and love drawing Pokémon in it! It's such a fun thing to do, and helps me relax :giggle: So I hope this helps! I would love any feedback on it!

This is the first tutorial for Photoshop I have done, so I hope it's clear! If you have any further questions don't hesitate to ask!

Because I had to shrink this down (I originally made it too big) the Golduck in the final picture comes out a bit small; click here to see the final product! [link]

Hope you enjoy!

Did you use the pencil tool or the brush tool? I'm asking because when I tried myself the brush tool (Hardness 0%) looked too blurry and the pencil tool (Hardness 100%) didn't make it look blurry enough

The brush tool. Although for these older ones I used the line tool (I don't do that anymore - I now draw freehand with the brush tool).

Thanks. I tried drawing freehand too and the one problem I thought I was having was that the edges of the shading looked too blurry

You might be using a blurrier brush? I tend to use the ones at the top (so not the more airbrush-like ones, but the harder brushes) and only size 3 pixels.

Dude how do you get a sketch in blue?

By using a blue colour and the freehand drawing tool in Photoshop, nothing more than that :)

I don't have Photoshop but GIMP, how am I supposed to use the freehand drawing tool with my mouse and make a good lineart? :/

Having never used GIMP I'm not familiar with it, sorry. I'm experienced with working with a mouse so the best advice I can give is to practice :) Or, maybe try and pick up a tablet - I don't like them much but they work very well for lots of people!

Chin up - don't sound so down! ;)

hehe, you're welcome :) It's a bit outdated now though. I don't use the line tool anymore, I just draw freehand.

Could you do one on how to draw in Sugimori's older (Gen 1 and 2) style?

I've never drawn in that style before, so it may not be the best idea! :)

I've been having a small issue with my lines. I use paint.net over a scanned image, and the program is preferable to me because I do not have a drawing tablet, and it allows me to curve the lines after I make them. The only problem is, when I open it with Photoshop (for coloring) the lines have blocks of white and grey along the sides (anti-aliasing?). You can really tell with darker images such as this one [link] If you have any suggestions that would be of help I would greatly appreciate it! Thanks!
